Essex Community Players is pleased to announce auditions for its winter production of John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt, A Parable, a powerful and provocative drama of suspicion and certainty, of faith and distrust, of fact and conjecture.
Set in the Bronx in 1964, the play tells the story of Sister Aloysius, a school principal, who takes matters into her own hands when she suspects charismatic Father Flynn of an improper relationship with one of the male students. Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award, Doubt is a play that could not be timelier.

  • Sister Aloysius: (50 -60) The principal of the inner-city Catholic school is watchful, reserved, and unsentimental.
  • Sister James: (20s) The fresh-faced new teacher at the school has a bit of sunshine in her heart, though she’s reserved.
  • Father Flynn: (30s) A priest. He is working class, from the Northeast.
  • Mrs. Muller: (35 – 40) Mother to the school’s first non-white student, she is determined to do the best she can for her child, whatever the cost.

Auditions will be Monday, December 4, and Tuesday, December 5, 6:30 – 9 PM at Memorial Hall, 5 Tower Road in Essex.
