Essex Community Players is pleased to announce its winter production of John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt, A Parable, a powerful and provocative drama of suspicion and certainty, of faith and distrust, of fact and conjecture.
Set in the Bronx in 1964, the play tells the story of Sister Aloysius (Charlotte Norris of Burlington), a Catholic school principal, who takes matters into her own hands when she suspects charismatic Father Brendan Flynn (Trevor Fulchino of South Hero) of an improper relationship with one of the male students. The play also stars Rebecca Laird of Burlington as Sister James, a naïve young nun caught between her priest and her Mother Superior; and Fabienne Nadeau as Mrs. Muller, the mother of the boy Fr. Flynn is suspected of abusing. Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award, Doubt: A Parable is a play as moving and as relevant today as it was then.
Director Richard Hibbert, a Burlington resident and retired Methodist minister, says, “In Doubt: A Parable, John Patrick Shanley has given us a reflection on timeless matters – fear and uncertainty, the need for courage to sustain us, our struggles in the face of social upheaval and the disruption of our sense of normal. Each of the characters in this moving story challenges us to look at our own heart. They invite us to recognize what gives us hope. In this powerful story, I find an invitation to live in a faith that gives us strength.”
In keeping with Essex Community Players’ “Essex Gives Back” charitable donation program, all monies from concession will be donated to the Chittenden Children’s Advocacy Center, a program that advocates for child abuse victims and their families and supports them through treatment, investigation, and prosecution.
