Memorial Hall is dedicated to the brave souls of Essex who gave up their lives “for the preservation of the Union”. It has played many roles in serving the Essex community: a town meeting place, a basketball gymnasium, and, of course, a theater.
As a theatrical venue, the Hall has qualities that give ECP our special identity. It is not the easiest place to perform—no stage, the lack of wings, little room off stage, a very wide and shallow performance area—but those seated in the first row can reach out and literally touch the on stage actors. There is not a bad seat in the house! Proximity to the action presents other challenges; for example, the sets require more detail, but the audience is drawn into an experience unique to ECP.
